How to Size a Wood Splitter for Your Mini Excavator (And Why Getting It Wrong Is an Expensive Mistake)

How to Size a Wood Splitter for Your Mini Excavator (And Why Getting It Wrong Is an Expensive Mistake)

SideTool on 27th Jun 2026

You already own the most powerful firewood processing machine on your property. You just haven't bolted the right attachment to it yet.

If you're shopping for a mechanical wood splitter for your excavator, the single most important thing you need to get right — before price, before lead time, before anything else — is size. Not the size of the splitter. The size of your machine.

Get this wrong and you're either leaving serious splitting force on the table, or you're putting stress on a machine that wasn't built to handle it.

Here's exactly how to size it correctly.

Why Operating Weight Is the Number That Matters

When people think about machine size, they usually think about horsepower or bucket size. Those don't matter here.

What matters is operating weight — the total weight of the machine as it sits ready to work, including hydraulic fluid, a full fuel tank, and the operator. This number directly determines how much thumb force your machine can generate, which is what drives the splitter.

The SideTool Mechanical Wood Splitter works in tandem with your machine's existing thumb. Your thumb is powered by the same hydraulic system that runs your bucket — and the force it can apply is tied directly to machine size. A 3,000-lb machine and a 20,000-lb machine are not going to apply the same force through the thumb. Not even close.

This is why we size by operating weight, not by horsepower, brand, or bucket capacity.

The SideTool Sizing Chart

Here's how it breaks down:

Machine Operating Weight SideTool Model Price (Shipped)
3,001 – 6,000 lbs Small $2,195
6,001 – 10,000 lbs Medium $2,495
10,001 – 14,000 lbs Large $2,595
14,001 – 20,000 lbs XL $2,895
20,001 – 30,000 lbs XXL $3,095

If you don't know your machine's operating weight off the top of your head, check the decal on the side of your cab, look it up in the operator's manual, or just Google your machine's make and model — it'll be in the spec sheet.

Real Machines, Real Examples

Here's how some of the most common machines our customers run translate to splitter sizing:

Kubota KX040-4 — Operating weight: ~8,800 lbs → Medium ($2,495) One of the most popular mini excavators in the country. The KX040 has plenty of thumb force to drive the Medium splitter through hardwood without hesitation.

Cat 303.5 — Operating weight: ~7,500 lbs → Medium ($2,495) Phil Anderson ran 15 full cords of Red Oak, Ash, and Elm through his Cat 303.5 with a SideTool Medium. His words: "Best investment I've made recently."

Kubota KX057-4 — Operating weight: ~12,500 lbs → Large ($2,595) The KX057 sits right in the Large range. If you're processing serious volume — 20+ cords a season — this machine with the Large splitter is a legitimate firewood operation.

John Deere 35G — Operating weight: ~7,900 lbs → Medium ($2,495) Compact, capable, and common on rural properties. Fits the Medium with room to spare.

Bobcat E35 — Operating weight: ~7,700 lbs → Medium ($2,495) Another common machine in the 6,000–10,000 lb range. The E35 pairs well with the Medium for property-scale splitting.

Cat 308 — Operating weight: ~18,500 lbs → XL ($2,895) If you're running a machine this size, you're probably processing serious volume — boiler fuel, side jobs, or both. The XL handles rounds up to 42 inches wide.

The Two Mistakes That Cost People Money

Mistake #1: Undersizing for the wood species you're splitting

Operating weight determines the correct model — but wood species determines whether you're going to have a good time or a frustrating one.

If you're splitting mostly Pine or Poplar, almost any size machine handles it easily. But if you're in the Midwest or Northeast splitting Red Oak, Ash, Elm, or Hickory — especially knotty, gnarly rounds — you need to be running a machine with enough thumb force to drive through without stalling.

The rule of thumb: if you're splitting hardwood over 24 inches wide, don't try to go one size down to save $200. It's not worth it.

Mistake #2: Assuming your machine doesn't have the right coupler setup

Setup is a one-time job: weld four ears onto your existing thumb, and the SideTool bolts right on. After that, mounting and dismounting takes minutes — no brackets, no adapters, no hydraulic lines ever.

But — and this is important — your machine does need a thumb.

A lot of mini excavator owners run their machines without a thumb, especially if they're doing primarily digging work. If that's you, you'll need to add a thumb before the SideTool will work. Most thumb kits for common machines are available through your dealer or aftermarket suppliers, and installation is straightforward.

If you already have a thumb, you're ready to go. That's the main thing we confirm before finalizing a quote.

What About Coupler Style?

SideTool fits most standard pin-on and quick coupler setups. The attachment uses your machine's existing coupler mounting points — the same way any bucket or thumb attachment does.

If you're running a proprietary quick coupler system (some Cat and Volvo setups), just mention it when you request a quote and we'll confirm compatibility before you order. We've shipped over 1,800 splitters and have seen just about every coupler configuration out there.

How Much Wood Can You Actually Process?

Here's what real operators report:

  • Ron Halme runs two cords an hour splitting on the ground, one cord an hour splitting directly into a dump trailer
  • Brian Doctor filled several dump trailers in a single weekend and said the splitter nearly paid for itself on day one
  • Corey Paulette has run over 100 cords through his SideTool since purchasing — 30-inch and 36-inch rounds, no issues

If you're heating with a wood boiler and burning 20–40 cords a season, the math on time saved is significant. Most customers tell us they went from a multi-weekend project to two or three focused days of work.
