What matters is operating weight — the total weight of the machine as it sits ready to work, including hydraulic fluid, a full fuel tank, and the operator. This number directly determines how much thumb force your machine can generate, which is what drives the splitter.

Cat 303.5 — Operating weight: ~7,500 lbs → Medium ($2,495) Phil Anderson ran 15 full cords of Red Oak, Ash, and Elm through his Cat 303.5 with a SideTool Medium. His words: "Best investment I've made recently."

Kubota KX057-4 — Operating weight: ~12,500 lbs → Large ($2,595) The KX057 sits right in the Large range. If you're processing serious volume — 20+ cords a season — this machine with the Large splitter is a legitimate firewood operation.

John Deere 35G — Operating weight: ~7,900 lbs → Medium ($2,495) Compact, capable, and common on rural properties. Fits the Medium with room to spare.

Bobcat E35 — Operating weight: ~7,700 lbs → Medium ($2,495) Another common machine in the 6,000–10,000 lb range. The E35 pairs well with the Medium for property-scale splitting.

The Two Mistakes That Cost People Money

Mistake #1: Undersizing for the wood species you're splitting

Operating weight determines the correct model — but wood species determines whether you're going to have a good time or a frustrating one.

If you're splitting mostly Pine or Poplar, almost any size machine handles it easily. But if you're in the Midwest or Northeast splitting Red Oak, Ash, Elm, or Hickory — especially knotty, gnarly rounds — you need to be running a machine with enough thumb force to drive through without stalling.

The rule of thumb: if you're splitting hardwood over 24 inches wide, don't try to go one size down to save $200. It's not worth it.

Mistake #2: Assuming your machine doesn't have the right coupler setup

Setup is a one-time job: weld four ears onto your existing thumb, and the SideTool bolts right on. After that, mounting and dismounting takes minutes — no brackets, no adapters, no hydraulic lines ever.

But — and this is important — your machine does need a thumb.

A lot of mini excavator owners run their machines without a thumb, especially if they're doing primarily digging work. If that's you, you'll need to add a thumb before the SideTool will work. Most thumb kits for common machines are available through your dealer or aftermarket suppliers, and installation is straightforward.
